Permission for permanent residence (Immigration Control Act, Article 22)

Permission for permanent residence is a type of permission for change of status of residence. It refers to permission granted by the Minister of Justice when a foreign national with a status of residence wishes to change their status of residence to "Permanent Resident."

A foreign national who has been granted permission for permanent residence will reside in Japan with the status of "Permanent Resident." The "Permanent Resident" status of residence does not limit the activities or period of stay of the holder and is therefore subject to much more lenient residence control than other statuses of residence. Consequently, permission for permanent residence requires a much more careful investigation, and therefore regulations that are separate from the general change of status of residence permission procedures have been especially provided.
