Designated Activities 14

Students who have received an offer from a place of employment while at university or after graduation and wish to stay in Japan until they are hired.

  • This applies to those falling under either of the following:
  1. Foreign nationals residing with a "Student" status of residence
  2. Foreign nationals residing with a "Designated Activities" status of residence with the purpose of continuing to search for a job

Documents to be submitted

  • "Applicant" refers to a foreign national wishing to reside in Japan.
  • All certificates issued in Japan must have been issued up to three months prior to the submission of the application.
  1. Application form for change of status of residence - 1 copy
  2. One photograph (4 cm long × 3 cm wide)
    • A sharp, clear photo of the applicant facing forward with no hat, cap, or head covering taken against a plain backdrop with no shadows; must have been taken within three months prior to submitting the application.
    • The photograph should be attached to the photograph section of the application with the name of the applicant written on the back of the photograph.
  3. Presentation of passport and residence card
  4. Presentation of proof of identity (certificate of permission to act as a proxy, family register, etc.)
    • If the application is being submitted by someone other than the applicant (the person submitting it should refer to this page), proof of identity is required to confirm that they are qualified to do so. Even if the application is submitted by someone other than the applicant, the passport and residence card of the applicant must to be presented, as written above in point 3.
  5. Documents proving the ability to cover all expenses during the applicant’s stay - as required
    • If someone other than the applicant will cover the expenses, submit documents proving that person has the ability to do so, and documents describing how the payments will be made.
  6. Required materials for an application to change to a work-related status of residence, which will be changed according to the activities carried out after being hired by a company
    If the prospective employer falls under either Category 1 or 2, then a document that includes the following information must also be submitted.
    (1) Name of the prospective employer
    (2) Primary location of employment (name, address, and phone number of main or branch office)
    * If the applicant will be working under a dispatch contract, then the location they will be dispatched to must also be provided.
    (3) Business details
    (4) Total salary (remuneration)
    (5) Employment details
    * If the applicant will be working under a dispatch contract, then information regarding the activities they will perform at their intended location must also be provided.
  7. Document confirming the intention of the company to hire the applicant and the intended date of hiring - 1 copy
  8. A written oath to uphold the obligations of communication (PDF; in Japanese) - 1 copy
  9. Documents that confirm activities during training until hired (in cases where there are corresponding activities) - as required


  1. If the documents to be submitted are in a foreign language, attach Japanese translations.
  2. As a general rule, submitted documents cannot be returned. If you wish them to be returned for a special reason, such as difficulty in obtaining new originals, make a request for their return at the time of application.
