  • Students from overseas who have graduated from university but wish to stay to search for a job in Japan

This applies to those falling under either of the following:

  1. University students continuing their search for a job
    Foreign nationals staying in Japan with the "Student" status of residence who started looking for a job before graduating, have since graduated from university under the School Education Law (including junior college and graduate school; same hereinafter), and wish to stay in Japan to continue looking for a job. (This is the same for foreign nationals who graduated from professional training colleges.)
  2. Professional training college students continuing their search for a job
    Foreign nationals staying in Japan with the "Student" status of residence who have acquired a specialty degree and graduated from a post-secondary course of a specialized training college under the School Education Law, and wish to stay in Japan to continue looking for a job, as they had been before graduating. Their specialized training college course degree must be recognized as related to activities falling under work-related statuses of residence, such as "Engineering/Specialist in Humanities/International Services."

Documents to be submitted

  • "Applicant" refers to a foreign national wishing to reside in Japan.
  • All certificates issued in Japan must have been issued up to three months prior to the submission of the application.

General documents

  1. Application form for change of status of residence - 1 copy
    * This form is available at Regional Immigration Services Bureaus.

  2. One photograph (4 cm long × 3 cm wide)
    • A sharp, clear photo of the applicant facing forward with no hat, cap, or head covering taken against a plain backdrop with no shadows; must have been taken within three months prior to submitting the application.
    • The photograph should be attached to the photograph section of the application with the name of the applicant written on the back of the photograph.
  3. Presentation of passport and residence card
  4. Documentation proving the ability to cover all expenses during the applicant’s stay - as required
    * If a person other than the applicant will cover the expenses, submit documentation proving that person has the ability to do so, and documentation describing how the payment will be made.
  5. Presentation of proof of identity (certificate of permission to act as a proxy, family register, etc.)
    If the application is being submitted by someone other than the applicant (the person submitting it should refer to this page), proof of identity is required to confirm that they are qualified to do so. Even if the application is submitted by someone other than the applicant, the passport and residence card of the applicant must to be presented, as written above in point 3.

University students continuing their search for a job

  1. Diploma (copy) or graduation certificate from the university that the applicant was enrolled in - 1 copy
  2. Recommendation letter for continuing job search from the university that the applicant was enrolled in - 1 copy

Professional training college students continuing their search for a job

  1. Certificate of possession of the title of professional engineer issued by the professional training college that the applicant was enrolled in - 1 copy
  2. Diploma (copy) or certificate of grades from professional training college applicant was recently enrolled in - 1 copy
  3. Recommendation letter for continuing job search from the professional training college that the applicant was recently enrolled in - 1 copy

  5. Documents clarifying details of coursework at the professional training college - 1 copy
  • It should be understood that other materials may be requested after the application has been submitted.

Students of Japanese language institutions in National Strategic Special Zones

  1. Diploma (copy) or graduation certificate (or completion of coursework certificate) from the Japanese language institution that the applicant was enrolled in - 1 copy
  2. Certificate of attendance issued by the Japanese language institution that the applicant was until recently enrolled in - 1 copy
  3. Diploma (copy) or graduation certificate (or completion of coursework certificate) from the applicant's overseas university (including graduate schools) - 1 copy
  4. Recommendation letter for continuing job search from the Japanese language institution that the applicant was enrolled in - 1 copy

  5. Documents clarifying that the applicant is continuing their search for a job - as needed
  6. Written vow to reside in the municipality where the Japanese language institution that the applicant was enrolled in is located, and regular consultation with this institution - 1 copy

  7. Certificate (copy) from the municipality in the National Strategic Special Zone confirming that the Japanese language institution that the applicant was enrolled in fulfills the requirements of the "Program to support job search activities for students graduating from overseas universities" - 1 copy
  • It should be understood that other materials may be requested after the application has been submitted.
  • This program is conducted in municipalities whose zone plans were certified by the Prime Minister based on the provisions of Article 8 of the National Strategic Special Zone Act.

Reminders

  1. If the submitted documents are in a foreign language, attach Japanese translations.
  2. As a general rule, submitted documents cannot be returned. If you wish them to be returned for a special reason, such as difficulty in obtaining new originals, make a request for their return at the time of application.
