Designated Activities 3

  • Foreign university students wishing to participate in an internship. (Activities which provide students with practical experience at a Japanese company as part of their studies.)
  • Foreign university students wishing to take a summer job. (A job over the summer holidays for a period of less than three months at a Japanese company doing work related to their studies or their future employment.)
  • Foreign university students wishing to participate in cultural exchange activities when university classes are not being held for a period of less than three months. (Events include those organized by either local government offices or elementary/junior high schools in Japan.)

* Please refer to the following public notices of the Ministry of Justice regarding requirements to participate in activities considered an "internship," "summer job," or "international cultural exchange," as well as institutions accepting such foreign nationals.

Documents to be submitted

  • The applicant must be a foreign national who wishes to enter and reside in Japan.
  • All certificates issued in Japan must have been issued no more than three months prior to the submission of the application.

General documents

  1. Application for issuance of a Certificate of Eligibility - 1 copy
    This form is available at Regional Immigration Services Bureaus.

  2. One photograph (4 cm long x 3 cm wide)
    • A sharp, clear photo of the applicant facing forward with no hat, cap, or head covering taken against a plain backdrop with no shadows; must have been taken within three months prior to submitting the application.
    • The photograph should be attached to the photograph section of the application with the name of the applicant written on the back of the photograph.
  3. Reply envelope (a standard envelope with the address clearly showing and 404 yen in postage stamps (simplified registered mail) attached) - 1 copy
  4. Applicant’s certificate of school enrollment - 1 copy
  5. Presentation of proof of identity (ID, etc.)
    * If a representative,You will be taken to an external page. proxy, or legal representative submits the application, proof of identity is required to confirm that the person submitting the application is qualified to do so.

Necessary documents for internships (Public Notice No. 9)

  1. Copy of agreement between applicant’s university abroad and the Japanese accepting organization - 1 copy

  2. Note of consent or letter of recommendation for the internship from the applicant’s foreign university
  3. Documents proving that the internship will be applied toward the acquisition of curriculum credits (internship implementation plan) - as required
    (Note) This may be included with the above item 6 (contract between the university and the Japanese public or private institution).
  4. Documents describing the details of the applicant’s activities in Japan, the period, and remuneration - 1 copy
  5. Documents clarifying the applicant’s past internship history - as required
    (Note) If the applicant has not stayed in Japan for an internship in the past, please submit documentation stating so (no specified format).
  6. Documents clarifying the time limits for completing a course at the applicant’s university - as required
  7. Other documents explaining items stipulated in the guidelines (Appendix 2 - Word (in Japanese) Word Refer to reference form)

Necessary documents for a summer job (Public Notice No. 12)

  1. Documents verifying the applicant’s vacation period - 1 copy
  2. Copy of agreement between applicant’s university abroad and the Japanese accepting institution - 1 copy
  3. Documents describing the details of the applicant’s activities in Japan, the period, and remuneration - 1 copy

Necessary documents for international cultural exchange (Public Notice No. 15)

  1. Documents verifying the applicant’s vacation period - 1 copy
  2. Copy of agreement between applicant and the Japanese accepting institution - 1 copy
  3. Documents from the local government agency (program plan, etc.) certifying fulfillment of the requirements to accept a foreign national university student (requirements established in Appendix 4 of Ministry of Justice Guidelines 15) - 1 copy

  • It should be understood that other materials may be requested after the application has been submitted.

Reminders

  1. If the documents to be submitted are in a foreign language, attach Japanese translations.
  2. As a general rule, submitted documents cannot be returned. If you wish for them to be returned for a special reason, such as difficulty obtaining new originals, make a request for their return at the time of application.
