How to use an automated gate (notice)

(This homepage is a guide to the automated gates for Japanese nationals and foreign nationals entering and departing Japan with re-entry permits, etc. For those who will use the automated gates under the Trusted Traveler Program, please see this website.)

  • Please use the automated gates when traveling overseas.
Immigration checkpoints at airports can get quite crowded during summer vacation and over the New Year's period.
Even in high seasons, the automated gates are relatively open, so the Immigration Services Agency recommends travelers use the automated gates when leaving or returning to the country.
There are automated gates in place at Narita International Airport, Haneda Airport, Chubu Centrair International Airport (Note), and Kansai International Airport. Please make use of the gates if traveling via these airports.
For more information, please read on below.

(Note) There are no automated gates at Narita International Airport Terminal 3, Haneda Airport Terminal 2, or Chubu Centrair International Airport Terminal 2.

Automated gate

The immigration examination area at the airport may become crowded when going on overseas business trips or vacations. At times like this, it is much easier to undergo immigration procedures by using the automated gates.
The automated gates provide a way to automatically conduct immigration procedures by verifying your identity via your passport and fingerprints.
It can be used by following the instructions on the display. You can register to use this system immediately at the airport on the day of your flight.

(Note) Reminders for user registration and use of automated gates

  • People who cannot provide their fingerprints alone or people who cannot operate the gates by themselves cannot use the automated gates.
  • The fingerprints of children 12 years and under are unstable; therefore, in some cases, their fingerprints cannot be registered (please also note that their fingerprints may not be able to be authenticated at the automated gates even if the fingerprints are able to be registered.)
  • Depending on the condition of their fingerprints (wear, aging, etc.), some people may not be able to register their fingerprint, or may not be able to use the system because of a lookup failure despite being registered.
