Regarding the use of facial recognition gates during departure procedures for foreign nationals

The facial recognition gates currently being used by the Immigration Services Agency during departure procedures for Japanese nationals will expand operations to include foreign nationals, starting with Haneda Airport on July 24, 2019. Narita International Airport, Kansai International Airport, Fukuoka Airport, Chubu Centrair International Airport, New Chitose Airport, and Naha Airport will follow, in that order.
There is no need to register in advance in order to use the facial recognition gates.

1. Operation start dates for facial recognition gates

Haneda Airport July 24, 2019 (Wednesday)
Narita International Airport August 27, 2019 (Tuesday)
Kansai International Airport September 25, 2019 (Wednesday)
Fukuoka Airport October 8, 2019 (Tuesday)
Chubu Centrair International Airport November 7, 2019 (Thursday)
New Chitose Airport Mid-November, 2019
Naha Airport Early July, 2020

Start dates for the Naha and New Chitose airports will depend on the progression of their respective renovations.

2. Eligibility

Persons able to use the gates are those who:

  1. Possess a biometric passport.
  2. Are able to operate the facial recognition system without assistance.
  3. Are at least 135 cm tall.
  4. Are departing with a "Temporary Visitor" status of residence. (Excludes departures made with re-entry permission.)
