Start of online procedures for status of residence

On March 29 of this year, advance application procedures for applications for extension of period of stay, etc. will start being received online.

1. History and background

In the "2018 Investment Strategy for the Future" approved by the Ministers in June of last year, the Cabinet stated that they "will begin accepting residency-related applications made online by affiliated organizations who have met certain requirements (submitting notifications of employment, etc.), on behalf of their foreign national employees." Based on this, the Ministry of Justice deliberated adopting an online system for status of residence procedures.
On March 22 of this year, the Ministry announced a revision to the Regulation for Enforcement of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act and published information related to procedures, etc., on the Immigration Control Agency home page.
On March 29, advance applications for extension of period of stay, etc., will start being accepted online. There are plans for the online reception of the actual application to begin in July of this year.
